Institutional Investors Flock To Stake $1 Billion in Ethereum Within a Week

After the long-anticipated Shangai/Capella (also known as Shapella) upgrade of the Ethereum (ETH) ecosystem enabled withdrawals of staked ETH, the staking activity on the platform has not only seen an uptick but is writing down record-breaking results.

Circle Launches Cross-Chain USDC Transfer Protocol for Ethereum, Avalanche

Circle has launched a mainnet protocol that enables users to transfer its US Dollar Coin (USDC) between Ethereum and Avalanche. The Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol (CCTP) does not use a traditional bridge but instead destroys tokens sent to its contract and issues new ones on the receiving network. Users can redeem the new tokens for bank deposits by depositing them with Circle or its partners. Fragmentation of USDC tokens on various networks is expected to decline and Circle anticipates the protocol will improve liquidity and capital efficiency in DeFi. The largest cross-chain protocols have pledged to use CCTP, including Celer, Hyperlane, LayerZero, LI.FI, MetaMask and Wormhole.

Optimism From Ethereum's Shapella Upgrade Is Fading, Crypto Options Show

The crypto options market is signaling a higher perceived risk of downside volatility in Ethereum's native token, ether (ETH), compared to bitcoin (BTC), two weeks after Ethereum's Shapella upgrade. Options tied to ether and bitcoin signaled a bias for bearish bets or puts, but the demand for puts in the ether market was stronger than in the bitcoin market, according to crypto derivatives analytics firm Block Scholes. Ether's one-month bearish out-of-the-money puts traded at a five volatility points premium to bullish OTM calls, while bitcoin's OTM puts traded at a three-point premium to calls. The risk reversal skew for ETH has now reversed its post-Shapella recovery relative to BTC options, suggesting a return to the slightly more negative sentiment assigned to ETH throughout this year.

Ethereum's Lifetime Energy Use Before the Merge Equaled Switzerland's for a Year

Ethereum's energy consumption from 2015 until it moved to a proof-of-stake (PoS) consensus mechanism late last year is equivalent to that used by all of Switzerland in just a year, according to the University of Cambridge's Centre for Alternative Finance. The Cambridge Blockchain Network Sustainability Index estimates that Ethereum's consumption totaled 58.26 TWh between 2015 and the Merge. Ethereum's energy consumption is now orders of magnitude smaller than Bitcoin's. However, CCAF is careful not to take a view on which algorithm might be better or worse. CCAF estimates Ethereum will consume 6.56 GWh of electricity annually.
