Ethereum Protocol Experiences Block Finality Incidents, Developers Release Patches and Caution Against Overloading Consensus

The Ethereum protocol experienced two incidents where its Beacon Chain stopped finalizing blocks on May 11 and May 12, 2023. Despite this, end users were still able to transact on-chain. Ethereum developers released patches to resolve the issue, but an analysis is still underway to determine the root cause.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin cautioned against overloading Ethereum consensus beyond its core functions, and emphasized the importance of preserving the chain's minimalism and finding alternate strategies to achieve security goals.

The Ethereum protocol has undergone several upgrades, including the Merge and Shapella upgrades, with the aim of enhancing scalability, security, and sustainability.
