Coinbase Reports Increased Earnings in First Quarter, While Making the Call for “Crypto Specific Rules”

Crypto exchange Coinbase's total revenue grew 23 percent quarter over quarter to $773 million, according to a Coinbase shareholder letter released on Thursday afternoon. 

The exchange also included a chapter in that letter about what it sees as “regulation by enforcement,” in the U.S. 

“America is in a position to lead in crypto and help update the global financial system. We need crypto specific rules, rather than regulation by enforcement, to help this innovative technology flourish and for America to maintain its leadership position,” the exchange said.

  • Jump Trading is redeeming 120,000 wstETH in batches into ETH and then transferring it to CEX

    According to the monitoring of on-chain analyst Yu Jin, Jump Trading may be selling ETH: they are currently redeeming a wstETH (120,000 pieces) worth $410 million in batches into ETH and then transferring it to exchanges such as Binance/OKX. So far, they have unpacked and redeemed 83,000 wstETH into 97,500 ETH in the 9 days since July 25. Among them, 66,000 ETH (191.4 million US dollars) have entered the exchange.At present, there are still 37,600 wstETH in their wstETH storage address that have not been transferred out; 11,500 stETH in the redemption ETH address is being redeemed into ETH; and 20,000 ETH in the ETH transfer address to the exchange are waiting to enter the exchange in batches.

    Paul Grewal.eth, the Chief Legal Officer of Coinbase, wrote on the X platform that the issues of Chevron and Binance's secondary sales have been clarified, but in Coinbase's lawsuit, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has prevented Coinbase from requesting the disclosure of Gary Gensler's communication documents. In March 2021, Gary Gensler told the U.S. Congress that the SEC lacked regulatory authority over digital asset exchanges, confirming the long-held belief among market participants that digital asset trading on these exchanges is not within the jurisdiction of securities law. Coinbase has requested that Gary Gensler provide documents related to these communications because they are related to how the SEC's enforcement actions violate the due process requirements of the Constitution, but the SEC and Gary Gensler are trying to prevent the disclosure of these documents.
