Coinbase's Base network, which currently uses optimistic rollups to connect to the Ethereum mainnet, may expand to include zk-proofs. While optimistic rollups assume transactions are legitimate unless proven otherwise, zk-proofs submit regular proofs that all transactions are legitimate, making them more secure but expensive.
Coinbase plans to take advantage of both approaches by building a great rollup that is open source and configurable and starting with optimistic stuff. The company expects to see multiple implementations of zk-rollups included in the OP Stack by 2024, which will find adoption among Base, OP Mainnet, and other networks using its codebase. Community contributions and corresponding network effects are a perk of building in the decentralized space.
