Samsung Display demos long rollable and a health-sensing OLED

Samsung Display has unveiled two new OLED panels at the annual Display Week trade show in Los Angeles. The Rollable Flex is a flexible screen that can be unrolled from 49mm to over five times its length, while the Sensor OLED Display offers fingerprint and blood pressure sensing without requiring a separate module. The latter also measures heart rate and stress levels via readings taken from fingers. Both technologies could have implications for future smartphones, although Samsung does not produce consumer devices directly.

Samsung Electronics suspends internal review that contemplated changing its smartphones’ default search engine from Google to Microsoft’s Bing

Samsung Electronics has suspended an internal review that was considering changing the default search engine on its smartphones from Google to Microsoft's Bing. The potential switch would have replaced Google as the go-to search engine on Samsung's "Internet" web-browsing app, which comes preinstalled on the South Korean company's smartphones. However, concerns over how the switch could be perceived by the market and its impact on Samsung's business relations with Google led to a decision not to further discuss the matter at this time. Samsung shipped roughly 260 million smartphones last year, accounting for roughly one-fifth of the worldwide total.

Samsung and Bank of Korea Partner to Develop Offline Central Bank Digital Currency Technology

Samsung Electronics and the Bank of Korea have formed a partnership to research Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) technology that can facilitate offline transactions. The collaboration aims to eliminate the reliance on the internet and introduce a new phase of smooth offline transactions. Samsung Electronics participated in the Bank of Korea's two-part mock testing of CBDC last year and helped develop an offline CBDC technology that makes transactions and payments between mobile devices via near-field communication without an online connection using Samsung’s security chip, the embedded Secure Element. The two companies will work on enabling users to access transactions and payments through Samsung’s Galaxy smartphones and Galaxy Watch even in situations when online networks cannot be accessed. The adoption of CBDCs is accelerating around the world, but there are still concerns about privacy and security.

Samsung partners with Bank of Korea for research on central bank digital currency ecosystem

Samsung Electronics has partnered with the Bank of Korea (BOK) to conduct research on developing a central bank digital currency (CBDC) ecosystem. The two parties signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) at Samsung's headquarters in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province. The MOU will see Samsung and the BOK collaborate on further research into the CBDC issued by the BOK, as well as in the offline payment sector. Samsung previously participated in the BOK-led CBDC pilot project last year, during which it developed offline CBDC technology to enable device-to-device transfers and payments through near-field communication (NFC).
