The Saint Gheorghe Recovery Hospital in Botoşani, Northeastern Romania, has become the target of hackers who locked its medical records from December and demanded to be paid in cryptocurrency to restore access to the files.

Crypto prices steadied while stocks tied to digital assets sank on ratings news and financial results. 

Every once in a while, Ethereum Classic [ETC] registers a large price pump that is usually associated with whale activity. The latest such event occurred on 4 January, when ETC bulls pulled off a surprise attack and pushed the token up by over 20% in one day.

Bitcoin (BTC) is back to its range after a failed attempt to reclaim previously lost territory, with a likelihood of seeing further losses. The crypto market has seen a weak price action in 2023, but BTC has been notably more fragile than other digital assets. 

As 2023 begins, Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies continue to be a hot subject of controversy due to the considerable attention they have received about their potential negative environmental impacts, including the energy they require and the CO2 emissions they produce. 

Crypto analyst and verified CryptoQuant author Maartunn (@JA_Maartun) has disclosed that a previously dormant Bitcoin address has moved 4000 BTC 2 to 3 years old.

Bitcoin tried its hand at taking down $17,000 but was stopped just shy of it.

Bitcoin and Ether rose in Thursday morning trading in Asia along with most other top 10 non-stablecoin cryptocurrencies. Cardano led the gainers, while Litecoin and Tron were the only ones on that list to fall. Economic data from the U.S. on Wednesday indicated inflation is easing, but this was muted by concerns the Federal Reserve remains set on raising interest rates. The latest U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) showed that inflation was up 7.1% in November compared to last year, though a decline from readings of 7.7% in October and 8.2% in September. The December CPI will be released on January 12 at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time. (forkast)
