Tech Firms Urge EU to Ease Rules for Open-Source AI Models in Open Letter

Tech firms including GitHub, Hugging Face, and Creative Commons have written an open letter urging the European Union to ease upcoming rules for open-source artificial intelligence models. The letter argues that regulating upstream open-source projects as if they are commercial products or deployed AI systems would hinder open source AI development. The group provided five suggestions to ensure that the AI Act works for open source models, including defining AI components clearly and clarifying that collaborative development on open source models does not subject developers to the bill requirements. The European Parliament passed the Act in June, and the next step involves individual negotiations with members of the EU to smooth out the details.

Former BitMEX CEO Arthur Hayes predicts AI-powered DAOs will revolutionize economic entities

Arthur Hayes, former CEO of BitMEX and current CIO of Maelstrom, has stated that AI-powered DAOs (decentralized autonomous organizations) will transform the way economic entities are structured and funded. Traditional company structures are not well-suited for AI-driven entities, which do not have physical bodies and cannot be coerced or punished by state-enforced contracts. Instead, AI DAOs will use smart contracts on public blockchains to provide services for a fee, allowing them to be self-governing and enforce their own rules. Hayes predicts that DAO capital markets will become the first truly global markets, with decentralized exchanges dominating the trading of various DAO-issued tokens. He believes that the future AI-powered economy will grow into a market of trillions of dollars within the next decade, leading to a surge in the price of Ethereum's native tokens.

Meta Will Charge Big Cloud Providers Like Microsoft, Amazon or Google To Resell Llama2

Meta plans to profit from the resale of Llama2 AI large language models from major cloud computing companies. Llama2 is open, but in addition to making the technology open source, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said on a quarterly earnings call that Meta included a clause that the largest cloud computing companies would not receive free licenses to use it. Instead, a commercial agreement must be reached with Meta. "Companies like Microsoft, Amazon or Google basically resell services, and I think we should get some revenue from that," Zuckerberg said.

A Plan To Remove One Billion Tons of CO₂ using AI, Web3 and Good Old-Fashioned Hard Work

Climate change is the biggest threat to human civilization and life on Earth we face today. Over the next century we face increasingly hostile environmental impacts to society and to the ecosystem on which we depend on. Increasing temperatures, rising sea levels, extinction of native flora and fauna and the migration of species and humans from lands unfit for habitation to other areas less effected will create economic and societal imbalance we are not prepared for.

Silicon Box launches $2B semiconductor packaging fab in Singapore

Semiconductor startup Silicon Box, co-founded by Weili Dai, Sehat Sutardja, and CEO Byung Joon "BJ" Han, has launched a $2 billion advanced semiconductor packaging fab in Singapore. The facility aims to revolutionize chip manufacturing, develop local capabilities, and enhance Singapore's position as a global hub for semiconductor manufacturing. Silicon Box's proprietary fabrication method enables the industry to take advantage of the chiplet concept, bringing designs that double computing performance at lower costs for graphical processors, high-performance computing chips, and mobile processors. The company plans to produce 9,000 panels a week to power emerging technologies such as AI, data centers, electric vehicles, mobile devices, and wearables. Silicon Box has partnered with MeetKai, a metaverse startup, to create a digital twin of their facility and enable semiconductor solutions required for next-generation applications.

German Researchers Develop Breakthrough Material Design for Neuromorphic Computing With Potential Implications for Blockchain and AI

German researchers from Technische Universität Dresden have developed a new material design for neuromorphic computing, using a technique called "reservoir computing" to perform algorithmic functions near-instantaneously. This breakthrough could have revolutionary implications for both blockchain and AI.

Former Dogecoin Investor Launches AI-Powered Crypto Security Startup called Shield3

Geoffrey Arone, who lost his Dogecoin due to a hack on the exchange hosting them, has launched a new company called Shield3. The start-up offers on-demand infrastructure and developer tools that use AI to enforce security, policy and compliance for anyone working with crypto. Shield3 can also evaluate smart contracts on DAOs and NFT projects to scan for anomalies, flagging or blocking transactions if inconsistencies are found. Arone has spoken to larger exchanges and wallets about integrating with his products, and believes banks will need to partner with advanced technology providers to bolster security.
