Throughout his career, Alan Matula, CIO of Royal Dutch Shell, has used IT to drive and support major global business and functional transformations. His experience encompasses business process standardization, delivering value through IT, and leveraging a diverse workforce to sustain organizational change.
After joining Shell in 1982, Alan’s assignments spanned Shell’s IT and business activities including operations, large program development, strategy and planning, all of which helped shape the business-centric perspective Alan brings to IT. His Corporate Planning experience in Shell US deepened his board level capabilities across the major businesses, leading to a restructuring into strategic businesses, and delivery of major transformational programs.

Since 1996, Alan has driven strategies delivering globalization of businesses and the IT Function. He globalized Shell Chemicals as CIO (1996); served as one of the leaders of “IT for Shell”, transforming IT into a more mature, cost-effective community of professionals; and as CIO (2003), led Downstream in one of the industry’s largest global transformations. More recently, he supported the launch of the Technical and Competitive IT organization whose role is to deliver IT solutions that contribute to Shell’s strategy of becoming the most competitive and innovative energy company globally.

Alan became Royal Dutch Shell’s CIO in July 2006, introducing “OneIT” as the third phase of Shell’s IT transformation. This phase combined business initiative-focused project spend with a function-wide shift to adopt partnering between Shell IT and strategic suppliers. This Ecosystem complements the business intimate knowledge of staff with world-class supplier delivery. Led by Alan, IT continues to enhance value realization to our business and positioning it as a core function in the company.

Originally from Chicago, IL, Alan holds a bachelor’s degree in Quantitative Business Analysis from Indiana University and an Executive MBA from Houston Baptist University.

He is married and balances work demands with quality time spent with his daughters, Mary Kay and Kristin. He enjoys sports, outside recreation and spending time with friends.
