Vouch Protocol Major Update: Earn Reputation Points Before Enjoying Llama Land

Validated Project

Abstract

Vouch Protocol builds a reputation system for the Arweave & AO ecosystem by verifying user identities to prevent bot attacks. A recent update introduced a points mechanism and multiple verification methods, including Gitcoin Passport, checking $AO balances, and staking $wAR tokens. Users must accumulate points through these verifications to participate in projects, enhancing validation diversity and reliability. This system protects genuine users' interests and promotes the growth of a high-consensus community within the ecosystem.

Since its launch, Vouch Protocol has played a key role in verifying user identities and building a credible reputation system for the Arweave & AO ecosystem, aiming to counter bot attacks. While it has had some success, it has not fully met expectations, as seen in the case of the AO gaming platform Permaverse. The platform required players to verify their accounts through Vouch, but the process only involved verifying a single X account, which could be linked to multiple wallet addresses, allowing bots to bypass the system easily.

As the AO ecosystem grows, the bot problem will become more severe, demanding a better solution. Elliot, the founder of Llama Land, recently introduced improvements to the Vouch Protocol, unveiling new features that include a points system and additional verification methods to enhance credibility and further prevent bot abuse.

The New Points System in Vouch Protocol

The update introduced a points-based system to move away from a single verification method. Projects integrating Vouch can now set specific point thresholds, requiring users to complete multiple verifications to meet the criteria for participation.

For instance, the game Llama Land requires 5 points, while Permaverse demands 4.2 points. Users gain points by completing different verification methods, with higher points signaling greater wallet authenticity.

New Verification Methods in Vouch Protocol

Alongside the existing X account verification, Vouch now includes three new verification methods: Gitcoin Passport, checking $AO balances, and staking $wAR tokens.

Method 1: Gitcoin Passport

Gitcoin Passport is a Web3 identity aggregator launched by Gitcoin, which creates a "Humanity Score" by integrating blockchain activity, social media, and KYC services to verify user identities and credibility. Vouch now allows Gitcoin Passport from Ethereum wallets to be used across the AO network, enhancing user credibility within Permaweb applications.

Method 2: Checking $AO Balances

This method verifies users' $AO token balances, which is significant as $AO holders are often $AR owners or cross-chain users. While it’s still possible to manipulate this system, the cost increases, boosting wallet credibility. This verification will remain valid until $AO becomes available for circulation, expected by February 2025.

Method 3: Staking $wAR Tokens

Users can also earn more Vouch points by staking $wAR tokens. The more tokens staked and the longer the staking period, the more points are awarded. Staked $wAR tokens are securely locked in escrow contracts and can be withdrawn after the lock-in period ends.

Conclusion

Though the exact point allocation for each new verification method remains unclear, this innovation provides a fresh approach to building a more robust reputation system. As more verification methods are introduced in the future, Vouch Protocol is expected to play a stronger role in preventing bot attacks, safeguarding genuine user interests, and fostering the growth of high-consensus communities within the Arweave and AO ecosystem.
