According to The Wall Street Journal, the US Treasury Department is planning to designate international cryptocurrency mixers as money laundering centers, citing their use by Hamas and other terrorist organizations. The designation is a form of sanction and it was noted that any financial transaction requires some reporting. According to The Wall Street Journal, Deputy Secretary of the Treasury Wally Adeyemo said: "Today's action highlights the Treasury Department's commitment to combating the use of convertible virtual currencies by a variety of illicit actors, including state-affiliated networks, cyber criminals, and terrorist organizations. More broadly, the Treasury Department is actively targeting illegal uses of the CVC ecosystem by terrorist organizations, including Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad."
