Worldcoin, a cryptocurrency project founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, has launched its core offering, the World ID, which requires an in-person iris scan using the company's 'orb' to verify that the account holder is a real human. The project has 2 million users from its beta period and is scaling up "orbing" operations to 35 cities in 20 countries. World IDs could be used to distinguish between real people and AI bots online, and Altman believes the technology could help address income inequality by reducing fraud when deploying universal basic income.
