Vitalik Buterin gave a keynote speech at the KBW2023 Blockchain Week in South Korea, stating that clients have to store more and more things. The first solution is to stop storing historical data, using EIP-444 (binding historical data in the client), the second solution is to transfer the responsibility of storing the state to dedicated nodes, and the third solution is to move old objects out of the state.
EIP-444 means that clients must stop providing historical headers, bodies, and receipts on the p2p layer for more than a year, and clients can delete (prune) this historical data locally.
Vitalik Buterin concludes that if we have statelessness and PBS, state expiration can be considered low priority, even if it is 8 TB of state, and ultimately we do need to solve the 20-byte address problem, whether it is due to state expiration or long-term security considerations.
