Vietnamese hacker indicted in US for $71M cybercrime involving cryptocurrency

Four Vietnamese citizens have been sued in the United States for allegedly causing over $71 million in losses due to a series of cyber attacks. The defendants are members of the cybercrime organization "FIN9," and are said to have carried out hacking attacks on the United States. Between May 2018 and October 2021, the company stole non-public information, employee benefits, and funds. They used stolen personal and credit card information to create accounts on cryptocurrency exchanges to conceal their identities. They also sold stolen gift cards on peer-to-peer cryptocurrency markets. The charges include conspiracy to commit fraud, telecommunications fraud, intentional damage to protected computers, money laundering, and identity theft, with a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
