Former US President Donald Trump has released a second series of digital trading cards featuring himself as a superhero, wrestler, firefighter and in other larger-than-life settings, with prices starting at $99. Each of the 47,000 non-fungible tokens (NFTs) in the 2nd series have been minted on Polygon, an Ethereum sidechain network, and sell for the same price as the original NFT series, which has seen its value fall since its release according to data from the OpenSea marketplace.
The original series of Trump Digital Trading Cards, which depicted Trump in various roles, was wildly mocked by critics when it was launched last year, but still managed to sell its 44,000 NFTs in 24 hours.
Despite new criticism, Trump believes his supporters will have fun buying his trading cards, particularly as buyers who purchase 47 NFT trading cards will receive a ticket to a gala dinner with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago golf club in Florida. Analysts suspect that the motivation behind Trump's NFT initiative is to shore up his finances, which were impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic and multiple lawsuits.
