The Russian Central Bank's digital currency project is progressing quickly, with a regulatory bill passing through its final reading in the parliament's lower chamber. However, the general public will not have access to the digital ruble until 2025-2027, according to CBR First Deputy Governor Olga Skorobogatova.
This timeline is still optimistic compared to a recent PwC report that estimates only 24 CBDCs will be live by 2030. The digital ruble will coexist with traditional cash and non-cash payment systems, providing consumers with more transaction flexibility.
The delay in launching the digital ruble may be due to technical aspects, as the infrastructure required for both online and offline transactions must ensure a high level of cybersecurity.
