The Russian government has used an NFT as evidence in criminal charges against artist and activist Nadya Tolokonnikova of Russian feminist protest and performance art group Pussy Riot, according to the group.
The NFT, entitled "Virgin Mary, Please Become a Feminist," depicts the Christian icon with what the criminal citation describes as "anatomical details of the female external genitalia." Finding its "hooliganism" law inadequate, Russia enacted a new law that adds the religious component and that Tolokonnikova calls the “Pussy Riot Law," and it is under that law that this latest criminal case is being pressed. The charges relate to "hurting the religious feelings" of the people of Russia.
