In a investigation into election fraud financing in Romania, cryptocurrency entrepreneur Bogdan Peșchir was found with $7 million in his home. Peșchir attracted attention for allegedly sending $381,000 to various TikTok accounts that were promoting Romania's presidential frontrunner, far-right, pro-Russian independent candidate Călin Georgescu.
Georgescu, a relatively unknown anti-NATO engineer, suddenly appeared on the Romanian political scene in the weeks leading up to the first round of voting in late November. Approximately 25,000 TikTok accounts, with a total of 8 million followers, suddenly started promoting him.
Peșchir's ties to the cryptocurrency industry raised further questions. His business dealings included a partnership with BitXATM, a Romanian cryptocurrency ATM company that was involved in a theft scandal in 2016. The company's founder, Gabrial Prodanescu, accused a former employee of the crime. Peșchir later testified in the trial and the man was ultimately convicted.
