Miami's Bitcoin-friendly Mayor Francis Suarez has filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission to run for President in the 2024 election. Despite facing competition from high-profile candidates such as former President Donald Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Suarez has already been elected twice as Mayor of Miami.
During the pandemic, Miami drew an exodus of tech workers from Silicon Valley and New York, and several crypto firms have relocated there permanently. Suarez has expressed his belief in the democratizing impact of Bitcoin and has examined ways to accept taxes and pay municipal employees in the currency, as well as launching MiamiCoin (MIA) on the Bitcoin adjacent blockchain, Stacks.
