Meta Lays Off Employees, Including Gameplay Programmers, as Company Continues Downsizing Efforts

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has laid off an undisclosed number of employees, including gameplay programmers who work on virtual and augmented reality products, according to LinkedIn posts.

This comes after Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg declared 2023 the "year of efficiency" and announced plans for an additional 10,000 job cuts in March, resulting in restructuring costs of between $3 billion and $5 billion. Despite Meta's huge investment in developing technology for the metaverse, its core business is struggling with an online ad slump, and analysts are projecting another quarterly sales drop when Meta reports its first-quarter earnings next week.

Meta's Reality Labs unit, tasked with building the metaverse, recorded a $4.28 billion operating loss last quarter, bringing the unit's total losses for 2022 to $13.72 billion.
