MakerDAO has faced criticism for blocking VPN users from accessing its new lending platform, Spark Protocol. The move is linked to Maker's attempt to restrict US users from accessing the platform, and Spark Protocol's terms of service prohibit US users from using a VPN to conceal their US residency.
DeFi analyst Chris Blec has criticised the decision, stating that it effectively acts as a blanket ban on VPNs across the globe, and accusing MakerDAO of prioritising profits over user privacy. The Spark Protocol offers users up to 8% in annual returns by lending DAI, and users must agree not to use a VPN before lending cryptocurrencies.
