The music downloading service LimeWire, which was popular in the early 2000s, has been resurrected as a browser-based game in the Web3 space. The LimeWire Game allows players to simulate using the service to search for and download music and movies popular during the early 2000s.
Each non-virus download adds 10 points to the player's score, and the top 1,000 players will receive crypto rewards in the form of LimeWire's ERC-20 token, LMWR. The game is available to play until May 15, and scores are tracked on a leaderboard. LimeWire has transformed itself into an NFT marketplace and creator membership platform, where artists can paywall exclusive content for fans and sell every piece of content they upload as an NFT, earning royalties on secondary sales. Its marketplace has seen $1 million in total volume traded since its launch last year, and it now has 3 million users and 20,000 creators on its waitlist.
LimeWire's co-CEO, Julian Zehetmayr, said that the game's nostalgic connection not only resonates with those familiar with LimeWire but introduces the younger generation to LimeWire's rich history as they venture into the Web3 landscape. Overall, the game is a fun way to capture early 2000s nostalgia and recreate the now-defunct LimeWire torrenting experience.
