Srettha Thavisin, who is vying to be the prime minister of Thailand, has promised every citizen 10,000 Thai Baht (approximately $300) in digital currency if his party, Pheu Thai, forms a government following the general election scheduled for May. Thavisin, a real estate mogul turned candidate, says the measure will provide some economic relief to Thais with some of the highest household debt in the region. The tokens to be used for the airdrop have not been disclosed, and the proposal has been met with questions on whether it would be the best use of funds instead of putting it towards alleviating poverty. Recent polls show that the election is going to be a close one, with Pheu Thai having approximately 46% of the vote in recent polls.
