June 28 (Cointime) - The European Commission has released its legislative plans for a digital euro, which would allow Europeans to make digital payments for free across the currency zone.
The plans include measures to protect privacy and financial stability, but some stakeholders are questioning the benefits of a potential central bank digital currency (CBDC).
The proposed digital euro could enhance the safety and integrity of the European payment system, stimulate innovation and competition, and offer features that private payment means do not. However, some lawmakers, governments, and commercial banks remain skeptical about the initiative.
