Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has identified the centralization of nodes as a major issue facing the network. The majority of active Ethereum nodes are currently run through centralized web providers, leaving the blockchain exposed to a centralized point of failure. Buterin highlighted the need to make running nodes cheaper and easier, with statelessness forming a key component of the Ethereum roadmap.
However, he admitted that these technical concerns were unlikely to be addressed in the immediate future and that achieving higher levels of scalability was the most pressing concern for Ethereum.
