The popularity of meme coins and NFT trading on Bitcoin has led to a surge in transaction fees and blockchain congestion caused by Ordinals. A Bitcoin code contributor, Luke Dashjr, has proposed implementing "spam filtration" as part of Taproot transactions to block Ordinals and BRC-20 tokens.
Dashjr believes this change should be imposed either through a Bitcoin Improvement Proposal (BIP) or as an update to the network's Core client. However, his proposal has received criticism from some members of the developer community, who do not see an urgent need for an Ordinal filter and suggest making Layer 2 implementations instead.
