The Bank of Spain (BDE) publicly called for partners to test central bank digital currency (CBDC) a year ago. On January 3, 2023, the Bank of Spain announced a resolution, declaring a partnership with Cecabank, Abanca, and Adhara Blockchain.

The CBDC pilot will be conducted in the next six months, simulating the processing and settlement of wholesale CBDC in a single tokenized form, as well as interbank payments through the exchange of multiple wholesale CBDCs issued by different central banks.
